Venezia 81 Golden Lion To The Room Next Door By Pedro Almodóvar
It's Monday after the finish of the 81st Venice International Film Festival but you can still feel that glamorous cinematic vibe and an impatient desire to watch as soon as possible the bearers of the Golden and Silver Lions. Especially the first English-language movie by the Spanish well-known master-class director Pedro Almodóvar The Room Next Door that beat the competition of other 20 movies and won the Golden Lion 2024.
The VENEZIA 81 Jury, chaired by Isabelle Huppert and composed by James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, Julia von Heinz and Zhang Ziyi, decided in favour of Almodóvar's new feature that supports euthanasia and stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. The film has received an 18-minute standing ovation after the premiering screening in Venice.
Silver Lion - Grand Jury Prize was handed to Vermiglio by Italian director Maura Delpero, which tells of the last year of the Second World War in a large family and how, by a paradox of fate, with the arrival of a refugee soldier it loses its peace at the very moment in which the world finds its own.
The American director Brady Corbert received Silver Lion - Award for Best Director for his three-and-a-half-hour-long movie The Brutalist. It chronicles the journey of Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth, who emigrates to the United States of America in 1947. Initially forced to toil in poverty, he soon wins a contract that will change the course of the next 30 years of his life.
Coppa Volpi for Best Actress went to Nicole Kidman for her risky role of the CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern in Halina Reijn's Babygirl. Meanwhile Coppa Volpi for Best Actor was handed to Vincent Lindon for the father's role who has to confront his radicalized son in French drama Jouer Avec Le Feu (The Quiet Son) by Delphine Coulin and Muriel Coulin.
