The Winner of 2024 Women's Prize For Fiction Announced
Yesterday the 29th winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction was announced. This year the greatest recognition of female creativity in the world was handed to V. V. Ganeshananthan, an American writer of Ilankai Tamil descent and her novel Brotheless Night.
This book has competed with other five novels in the shortlist. It is a beautifully written story about Sashi, a sixteen-year-old aspiring doctor, growing up in Jaffna in the 1980s. Her close family is torn apart by the onset of civil war in Sri Lanka. Her dream takes her on a different path as she watches those around her, including her four beloved brothers and their best friend, get swept up in violent political ideologies and their consequences.
The judging panel for the 2024 Prize was chaired by author Monica Ali joined by author Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀; author and illustrator Laura Dockrill; actor Indira Varma; and presenter and author Anna Whitehouse.
Last year the prize was handed to Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.
