Emilia Pérez Wins Big At 2024 European Film Awards

Emilia Pérez has become the best European film at 2024 European Film Awards. In Lucerne, Switzerland, Jacques Audiard’s latest feature film won all four nominations it was in, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón).

This Netflix crime drama is a loose adaptation of the 2018 novel Écoute (Listen) by Boris Razon. It tells the story of high-powered lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) who takes on an unexpected assignment: helping a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) fake their death and undergo gender-affirming procedures.

The Award of Best Animated European Feature Film went to the Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis' Flow about the cat who, as its home is devastated by a great flood, finds refuge on a boat populated by various species, and teams up with them despite their differences.

Best European Documentary Award was handed to No Other Land (Palestine, Norway) - documentary film, which shows the destruction of the occupied West Bank's Masafer Yatta by Israeli soldiers and the alliance which develops between the Palestinian activist Basel and Israeli journalist Yuval.

There will be no award announcement next year as the ceremony will move from December to mid-January, starting with the 38th edition in 2026 to stay in the loop of the global cinema award season.
