The postponed 30th annual Critics Choice Awards finally happened on February 7 bringing almost no surprises in terms of the winners. And we got still a month to go before it might be possible to confirm if these awards were an accurate predictor of Academy Awards.


Anora won Best Picture, while Emilia Pérez, The Substance and Wicked each took home three trophies overall in the film categories. Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Best Song for “El Mal”. The Substance won Best Actress for Demi Moore, Best Original Screenplay for Coralie Fargeat, and Best Hair and Makeup for Stéphanie Guillon, Frédérique Arguello, and Pierre-Olivier Persin. Wicked won Best Director for Jon M. Chu, Best Production Design for Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales, and Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell. 


Shōgun led in the series categories, earning four awards including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Tadanobu Asano, and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Moeka Hoshi. Hacks followed with three wins, earning Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Jean Smart, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Einbinder.

The Critics Choice Association is the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing almost 600 media critics and entertainment journalists. It was established in 2019 with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the intersection between film, television, and streaming content.
