Bong Joon Ho's Parasite Conquers Oscars 2020
This is what you get when you let a Parasite into your big fancy Hollywood house. It not only overtakes the most expected bits but also expropriates the most precious core. Bong Joon Ho's Parasite has done exactly that at the 92nd Academy Award Ceremony by winning Oscars for The Best International Feature Film of the Year, Best Original Screenplay as well as Best Directing and Best Picture.
Oscars 2020 will be remembered as the year when a non-English-language film won the Best Picture Award for the first time in the history of Academy Awards. Maybe it will finally make a trend of nominating masterpieces in foreign language in the major Best Picture category instead of trying to compensate worldwide recognition in the specific International Feature Film slot.
While Parasite celebrated its triumph Joker had to cope with an enormous despair, as its eleven nominations turned only into two awards: Best Actor and Music (Original Score). So no major writing or directing Oscars for this controversial movie, just a well-deserved bow to Joaquin Phoenix who allowed us to see a completely other kind of evil Joker and, of course, an original soundtrack implemented by Hildur Guðnadóttir.
Sam Mendes' 1917 was also left with disappointment, especially after such a snatch of major awards at BAFTA. Unfortunately, the foretelling didn't come true and the WWI drama didn't earn the title of the best picture of the year. In fact, apart from Best Cinematography Oscar, 1917 was recognized only for sound mixing and visual effects (which is, actually, well-deserved).
Before the Oscar ceremony Tarantino has said that the more nominations you receive, the more moments of possible disappointments you get. Well, his Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood had ten nominations that night, only two of which hit the score. So eight moments of disappointment might have been too much for even this witty director. As expected, Brad Pitt received his first Oscar for acting - a supporting role in the movie. The second Oscar was handed for Best Production Design.
On the other hand, Oscars 2020 didn't shatter the predictions of the actor/actress quartet. Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger for a leading role and Brad Pitt with Laura Dern for a supporting role were honored in all cinematographic awards of the year, and Oscars just sealed the deal.
