The Man Booker Prize 2016 Goes Overseas

Yesterday at London's Guildhall The Man Booker Prize 2016 shortlist has been cut to the only one. The announced winner has become the first American writer to win the Man Booker prize. And this honor was awarded to Paul Beatty and his novel The Sellout.

In the third year that the prize has been open to writers of any nationality, the shortlist has been split between British, US and Canadian writers. This time all odds were in favour of a satire of US racial politics and racial identity. The main character of The Sellout wants to assert his African American identity by bringing back slavery and segregation.

According to the judges, this year they have reached the unanimous decision based on the following judgement criteria: aesthetic, quality and depth of ideas, the craftsmanship of the writing and whether it transported the reader.

Launched in 1969, The Man Booker Prize aims to recognize the best novel of the year written in English and published in the United Kingdom.
